Why Entrepreneurship is the key to ‘Restore our Earth’?

“A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people. ” ― Franklin D. Roosevelt

Every year we celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd and this occasion serves as an annual (not enough!) reminder of how vital and significant our contributions are to nurture our planet. The theme for Earth Day 2021 is ‘Restore Our Earth’, “which focuses on natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems”. Taking cognizance of our consumption-driven behavior that poses a threat to this planet, we need to act FASTER and NOW to keep our planet safe and healthy for generations to come. After all, there is only one Earth, there is no Planet B!

On this day every year, world climate leaders, grassroots activists, nonprofit innovators, thought leaders, industry leaders, artists, musicians, influencers, and the leaders of tomorrow come together to push us towards a more sustainable world, and just like them, there is this one rising group of people who are creating and walking towards a pathway to sustainability.

The new advancing tech-driven world that is witnessing scientific breakthroughs almost every day is creating a myriad of opportunities that truly make this time in history remarkable to be in. But it is imperative for entrepreneurs that seize this opportunity to develop innovative solutions that have Additionality, are Available, are Accessible, and are Affordable (Sangam’s 4As Impact Framework)

Sustainable entrepreneurship not only helps the environment but also helps to deal with the social problems that our postmodern society is facing today. Thinking about sustainability, while innovating impact-based solutions and taking on sustainable entrepreneurship becomes more and more important in a globalized world. Entrepreneurship can help consumers and industries make sustainable consumption and production choices, which bring about necessary transformations to current products, processes, and consumer behavioral patterns.

Keeping in line with this year’s theme, Sangam seeks entrepreneurs that are developing solutions to move from an extractive to a regenerative pathway for the development of agriculture by helping the farmers invest in their soils through conservation agriculture practices, watershed management, and reducing the GHG footprint of the agriculture value chain. Beyond the farm, we invest to preserve local cultures, build self-sufficiency in local food systems and promote trade of unique regional produce allowing producers to invest in maintaining those salient qualities.

Entrepreneurs and youth are leading the way in thinking about how we impact our planet and taking major steps in restoring our planet, more than any government or business combined. Passionate entrepreneurs hold the power to save our planet.

At Sangam, we are doing our bit and supporting these entrepreneurs to drive wide-scale adoption of their innovative solutions to tackle climate change and “Restore our Earth”.

Hoping that you will celebrate this year’s Earth Day safely from your home. Stay safe, keep the virus away, and do not forget to wear your mask this Earth Day.
